Tasting notes

A luminous deep ruby red in the glass, this single vineyard Hawkes Bay Syrah displays complex layers of dark berry fruit, savoury spice, liquorice and lifted florals on the nose. Aged in French oak barriques for 15 months, the palate is finely balanced with elegant fruit, spice and gentle tannins that seamlessly lead to rich and smooth finish.

After being carefully hand-harvested into small picking bins, the grapes for this wine were lightly crushed and destemmed at the winery before undergoing a short cold soak period until signs of fermentation were observed. Gently warmed and then inoculated with purposely selected yeasts, the juice then underwent a rapid fermentation with temperatures pecking at around 30 to 33ºC. Post fermentation the resulting wine
underwent a short maceration on skins before being pressed to old French old barriques, where it was aged for an extended time, before being gently fined and prepared for bottling in late June 2015.

Hawkes Bay is New Zealand’s premium area for the production of full bodied red wines, and has become world-renowned for its Syrah wines. Free draining soils, a long dry summer and meticulous vineyard management enabled the grapes for this wine to ripen with a full spectrum of developed fruit flavours. The 2013/2014 growing season was characterised by near perfect growing conditions and low disease pressure, allowing the vineyard team to deliver faultless fruit to the winery at harvest time.
