Black fruit and dark plum aromas seamlessly blend with subtle spicy notes in this rich and concentrated Hawkes Bay Merlot. On the palate flavours of blackberry, cassis and subtle hints of dark cocoa are balanced with smooth, silky tannins that lead to a dry and richly textured finish.

Hand-harvested fruit was picked into small bins before being transported to the winery, where the grapes were lightly crushed and destemmed into open-top stainless steel fermenters. After a short cold soak period the must was warmed and inoculated with select yeast cultures. After inoculation the juice underwent a rapid fermentation with temperatures peaking at 30 to 33°C. Post-fermentation the resulting wine underwent a short maceration on skins before being pressed to old French old barriques and undergoing a secondary malo-lactic fermentation. Once this was complete the wine was allowed to age for 12 months before being gently fined and prepared for bottling in late March 2016.


Hawkes Bay is New Zealand’s premium area for the production of full bodied red wines, in particular Bordeaux varieties. The 2014/2015 growing season began with a dry early summer that followed through into January and February. The start of autumn saw some unsettled weather with a tropical cyclone brushing the Hawkes Bay area, however cool southerly breezes dried the vineyards out as soon as the rain had past. Almost perfect ripening conditions in the weeks leading up to harvest meant that the fruit for this wine was picked in optimal condition with outstanding fruit flavours.
