Aroha is in the air

Aroha is a special word based on the concept of generosity, with no expectation of return. Often translated simply as ‘love’, it also encompasses compassion, empathy, caring, affection and giving.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, now’s the time to share aroha with the one you love.

Stuck for ideas? We’ve come up with 7 creative ideas to surprise your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day. From free fun activities to the deluxe treatment. They’re all compatible with our special selection of wines. We recommend a sparkling like the Tohu Rewa Rosé or the Tohu Rewa Blanc De Blancs, or a rich red like the Tohu Awatere Valley Pinot Noir for the hopeless romantics.

1.       Learn something new together

Shared learning experiences are a great way to get closer to the one you love. Enrol in a joint cooking or pottery class, take rock climbing or chocolate making lessons, or sign up for a couples’ acting course. There are lots of options. Do some Googling, search your local event and activity listings or ask friends for recommendations.

2.       Forget flowers, go all out and plant a tree

Trees are an environmentally friendly way to honour the one you love. Plant a tree and watch it grow together, year after year. A tree is not only a lasting symbol of your love, it also gives pleasure to others and fights climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Choose a New Zealand native that flowers on Valentine’s Day, such as pōhutukawa or rata, for extra impact. Or you could buy an exclusive Tohu Flox Tote Bag and we’ll donate a native tree to ‘Trees that Count’ on your behalf.

3.       Turn your home into a hotel.

Romance starts at home. Cook a beautiful meal or order in from your favourite restaurant, pop a bottle of Tohu Rewa Blanc de Blancs, watch a romantic movie and share a luxurious bath. If you have kids – call in a favour with relatives or friends and arrange a sleepover.

4.       Go old school and create a photo album.

Free your beautiful photos from your computer and bring them into your home. Print a selection of sweet memories from your time together or use one of the great photo album creators available online. Leave the album on your coffee table or by your bedside to remind each other of how far you’ve come together and the wonderful memories you’ve already created.

5.       Have a champagne breakfast with a twist.

Valentine’s Day is one of the few days you can get away with wine before lunch! Set the alarm and go somewhere special to watch the sun rise. Pack blankets, croissants, a thermos of coffee, a bottle of Tohu Rewa Rosé Méthode Traditionnelle, and settle in for the best show on earth.

6.       Give the gift of time.

It may sound simple, but in this busy world – time is the best gift you can give the people you care about. Meaningful time together can so often be overlooked. As the saying goes – your presence is the present. Take the day off work and plan a day together. You could surprise each other with activities during the day like a bike ride, a day walk or pack a picnic and your surf boards and head to the beach. Or you could just stay in bed all day. You choose. The main thing is, whatever it is – do it together.
